How John and Maddi Saved Their Marriage and Became Millionaires

Just a few years after getting married, John and Maddi were on the edge of disaster. Buried under a mountain of debt with no emotional or financial stability, they were barely speaking to each other and tragically facing divorce.
They both came from previous marriages, but Maddi was dealing with toxic baggage from past domestic violence. Fearing that their marriage might turn into another controlling, abusive relationship, she wasn’t open with John about her finances, her feelings, or anything else.
“I had no control over my anger, my emotions, my spending, my words, anything,” Maddi recalled. “I was just an ugly person.”
One day, John checked his credit report. He discovered $20,000 in credit card debt Maddi had secretly obtained in his name. Something had to change. They started going to counseling, and in April of 2012, a friend invited Maddi to a Dave Ramsey live event.
“It was the most amazing experience,” Maddi said. “He said that line he says: If you have a problem with your money, it’s not the money—it’s the person in the mirror.”
Maddi grabbed hold of the life-change and hope Dave spoke of. They signed up for Financial Peace University (FPU) and worked the Baby Steps together to pay off over $300,000 in debt. Today, they’re not only happy and debt-free, but also millionaires with a net worth of $1.3 million! Find out how they did it.
