How David Volzer Found Purpose as a Full-Time Financial Coach

It’s 2:30 a.m. and David Volzer is awake. He’s wiping the sleep out of his eyes to deliver papers around town, hours before his day-job.

It’s not easy to get up before the rooster crows, but David’s hustling to get out of debt. And once he’s free, he’s saying sayonara to his tossing papers out the window and full-time engineering job. For a while now, he’s been dreaming of a job that will fill him up.

Finding Fulfillment at FPU

David needed that something that lit a fire in his soul. And actually, something did. It wasn’t a paying job, but it intersected with his own debt-free journey.

It was Financial Peace University (FPU). David led several classes as a coordinator—but it was just the beginning of his story.

“I couldn’t wait to go . . . teach the [FPU] class,” says David. “It really opened my eyes to that passion.”

That was it. That fulfilled him: helping people. He wanted to show people how to find and harness the drive to get out of debt—the same drive he tapped into to pay off his debt. And just like the FPU class, he wanted to see it all happen in real time.

“It was at that point that I started to think, Wow, if I could actually have a job that felt like this, where I’m helping people, that would just be amazing.”

FPU to Financial Coach

What started as a pipe dream became a reality. David got out of debt, and a few months later, he discovered Financial Coach Master Training (FCMT). As a financial coach, David could turn his passion into a full-time job. He could work with people one on one to help them crush their money goals—goals he’d reached, like saving for a home or getting out debt.

“The sooner I can do [FCMT], the sooner we can have some freedom, and [I] can escape engineering and [do] something more purpose-filled.”

So, that was it. David signed up for FCMT and began his journey as a coach.

“I couldn’t get enough of the training and the whole mindset. It felt like everything was coming together.”

He started helping his clients attack their money problems. And after a couple of years of helping people in his spare time, he got to leave engineering behind. He recently made coaching his full-time business.

David’s Tips to Creating A Successful Coaching Business

How did he go from wishing he could help people with their money to doing it full time? He recently shared some tips with us on how to get off the ground.

1. Set a Goal and Start. “Grab a journal and write down your why, articulating the passion you have to serve others,” David recommends. Set goals that are specific and measurable, and then go after it, coach.

2. Learn from others. “Learn from others who have gone before you instead of reinventing the wheel,” David says, who also notes that connecting with other coaches proves to be the most effective way to build a business. “I did exactly that [asking another coach for help]. Humbling myself. Saying I don’t know the best way to do this. So, I received coaching for myself.”

3. Serve with passion and confidence. Let your passion motivate you. And remember, shake that imposter syndrome—that voice that tells you’re not cut out for this. “You do have what it takes. You do have value. So, take the next step with confidence,” David says.
